There are many reasons why someone might want to engage in learning the Hebrew language. Hebrew is one of two national languages of the State of Israel (the other being Arabic), so those who travel to the Holy Land are often interested in picking up some spoken Hebrew before they head out. Similarly, thousands of people immigrate to Israel every year. As olim chadashim (עולים חדשים "new immigrants"), they find themselves in need of basic skills with the Hebrew language. Still others are interested in learning Hebrew for the sake of enriching their spiritual lives, given that the Jewish Bible is written in an older form of Hebrew, as well as most of the central holy books of Judaism – from the Mishnah (משנה) and Tosefta (תוספתא) to the prayer book (סידור). Understanding Hebrew has enriched the spiritual outlook of Jews and Christians for millennia.
Whatever your purpose in coming to the Hebrew language, the Hebrew Café is here to help you. We want to provide an encouraging online atmosphere which you should feel free to use to your own advantage. This site provides a list of links to further your Hebrew learning (see resources); a forum where you can interact with other members of the community; a Google+ community page for first contact, announcements and non-extended interactions; and, online lessons for small groups.
We hope that you will find what we have to offer both useful and enriching. If anything is lacking, please let us know.
