What translation of the Tanakh do you recommend?

No translation will ever provide a really good understanding of the Hebrew words written. Mainly because a lot translations don't capture the true essence of the word used.

What I see as mostly used in my circles are the Stone Edition Tanach, the Chabad website Tananch and the Koren Tanach.

This site will allow you to see the Hebrew and the English translation of the Jewish Publication Society side-by-side. 

I also highly recommend Robert Alter's translation and commentary.

I also like the Stone Edition.
