Link beteween words אָמַן'aman and אֵם 'em - JavierCornejo - 09-06-2024

Hello haverim,
I would like to know if there is any link beteween the verb אָמַן 'aman (to teach) and the word אֵם 'em (mother).
Thanks.

Amen does not mean "to teach". It comes from the concept of belief and acceptance. To teach is "lelamed".

I know the root lamed, which means to accostum or to learn a habit through practice. I am asking about the verb 'aman (not amen), which were used in TNK times to describe how a mother or a tutor teach his/her son/daughter/student: it is used in Esther 2:7 "and (Mordecai) was 'omen (teacher) to Hadasah".

Hi:

The root   אמן   only in the hithpael stem means "to teach".  BUT in Esther 2:7 it is in the Qal stem, which, in that stem, it means "to be faithful, to confirm, to support".

To say it another way, the same root can appear in many verbal stems (there are atleast 8 stems), and in each stem it has a different meaning/nuance.

so, for each verbal form you must

1.  identify the root
2. Then identify which stem it is in (Qal, niphal, ...., hithpael, ....)
3.  Then identify which conjugation it is in (Perfect, Imperfect, participle, ....)

In Esther 2:7, it is the Qal stem, participle conjugation

thanxs rosends - that's really interesting!

So it appears that only in modern Hebrew we see the Piel and Hithpael of   אמן   .  I'm using pealim:
