Chavak - Chavak - 12-28-2018

I've been a member of the forum since it started, and in all it's re-incarnations since!

I'm retired and live on small acreage with three cats and five sheep.
I like to spend my time working around the house and property, as well as a lot of the time at the range
and involved in competitive handgun shooting.

Hopefully I will be able to start doing a lot of traveling soon....my first big trip will be going to China in April. After that, I'm open to suggestions!

Hi, Chava!  I didn't know you had sheep – do you raise them for wool or do you keep them just because you like them?  Looking forward to hearing about your trip to China!  I'll be going to Scotland in April/May (hopefully before the midges start flying and biting).

Have an anagram of your screen name:

Achva Akim
= I am Chavak

Achva (אחוה):  Hebrew name, meaning "friendship."

Akim (אקים):  Short form of the Hebrew name Yehoyakim (יהויקים), meaning "God will establish."

Thank you for the name....it's a great one!

I raise sheep for two reasons. First, it counts towards farm deferral which gives me a big break on my property taxes. Second, it keeps the pastures under control.
They are hair sheep so they don't have wool. They get a thick coat of hair which sheds out every spring/summer so they don't have to be sheared. They are raised
for meat, but in my case they are just lawnmowers.

Sounds like we both might be overseas about the same time! We'll have to compare vacation notes.

The breed of sheep I have are called St. Croix:     [Image: images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQc7JdjVb-HfktCMl8kymO...gFKlmo2DrZ]

Sheep "lawnmowers"!  LOL  That's the kind of lawnmower I could really get to like!  Much quieter than the gasoline-powered kind!

Now, they just need to breed a critter that can replace noisy leaf-blowers...

That is the truest statement I've ever heard! I am right there with you. I just hate the whole idea of all of that investment, the sweat, the pile of dishes, pans, mixers, and utensils that you have to clean.... Then you sit down to eat, and within ten minutes everything is gone and you have more dishes to do.

Why not just order out on cardboard and paper, through the waste into the recycling, and be done with it? You get to spend more time in your book, watching your series, doing your studies. I just don't like the whole concept of cooking.

So my neighbor has been going to the rifle range with her son, where he's been teaching her to shoot.  She's kind of getting me interested, and I'm half-considering going along with them next time to give it a try.  I'm told that, here in New York State, you don't need a license to own a "long gun," and that's what my neighbor brings along to the range.  My neighbor explained to me that the gun she uses isn't really that long – her son got this kind for her and says it's popular with women because it's shorter and lighter than the other rifles.  I have no idea what she's talking about.  Chava, can you clue me in?

(P.S. – I have no desire to hunt animals.  I just want to shoot at targets to see why so many people enjoy it.)

I don't understand why so many people just LOVE cooking. Complete waste of time in my opinion, other than the fact that it is necessary to live.

I have no interest in hunting either. Never understood why people want to go out and kill animals, but that's me. I'm fine if others want to do it, just not my thing.

I don't know much about rifles-I'm a handgun type of gal-but I am wondering if it is a .22 LR?  All the women I know shoot AR-15s, I've got a couple of them myself but haven't used them much. Which is why I decided to take a course. Carbines are shorter than rifles, maybe that is what she means.
