I never heard of him either although the name does sound familiar.
Did he still play or was he retired?
Soccer isn't as big a sport here in the US as it is in the rest of the world.

I know near to nothing about sports. People in Israel are crazy about soccer ("football"), but I've never gotten into any type of sport at all. Had never heard of this guy, but many were upset at his passing.
