Reading the thread author's first post, I didn't get the impression that the mocking was direct. But rather, simply an observation. It's important to know that intellectual conflicts/differences in opinions and world views are not uncommon in father and son relationships. In fact, this is likely not even a conflict at all. But just simply his father's opinion getting expressed of which seems somewhat threatening.
I would, for the time being, just play it the "if not asked, don't go out of your way to tell" way.
