We are about to begin the second segment of our biblical Hebrew course, designated HE102 – Beginning Biblical Hebrew II.

Encounter Times: Tuesdays & Thursdays at 7:00pm (Eastern US), 4:00pm (Pacific US) beginning June 18, 2020.

Prerequisite: Anyone who wishes to join us for this course will be expected to have completed the equivalent of our HE101. All of the videos for the encounters of that course are available on our YouTube channel free of charge. The recordings of HE102 will also be placed on the YouTube channel for anyone who would like to learn along with our students. A similar level from another textbook will also be sufficient for joining the course. If you have completed up to chapter 18 of Basics of Biblical Hebrew by Pratico and Van Pelt, chapter 20 of A Grammar for Biblical Hebrew by Seow, or something similar, you will be prepared to enter this course.

Course Objectives: In HE101, we covered the Hebrew writing system (alphabet and vowel notation), the noun and adjective system and vocalic change rules, and the various pieces of the Qal verb stem. In HE102, we will continue to look at the verb system, this time covering the rest of the stems (Niphal, Piel, Pual, Hiphil, Hophal/Huphal, and Hitpael). We will also read through Jonah and Ruth in the graded reader. By the end of this course, the student will be able to read the narrative portions of the Hebrew Bible with a dictionary without difficulty. All grammatical features of the language will have been covered, and the only thing remaining will be to read larger portions of text.

Cost of the Course: Current students of HE101 will be provided entry to HE102 free-of-charge. Those who would like to join from outside will be charged a fee of $200. This includes meetings twice a week—once for grammar and instruction (“encounter”), and again for reading and translation practice. The normal course rate is $10 per session. This course is set for 31 online sessions—one week for chapter 18 and two encounters for each remaining chapter. That would be $310 per student for the course. At $200, this course is being offered for just under $6.50 US per online session. Of course, textbook purchase is not included in the price of the course.

Textbooks: Participation requires that the student have access to all of the following:
