I know that we tend to focus on the biblical language here. This is because we’re busy leading courses in reading the Bible. I wanted to make sure to get a bit of modern Hebrew into the August archives of the blog.<\/p>\n

As with all adjectives, the word \u05de\u05b0\u05e2\u05b7\u05e0\u05b0\u05d9\u05b5\u05df<\/span> must agree with the word it describes in gender, number, and definiteness. So, if you want to say “an interesting book,” the adjective would have to be masculine, singular, and indefinite. Thus, \u05e1\u05b5\u05ab\u05e4\u05b6\u05e8 \u05de\u05b0\u05e2\u05b7\u05e0\u05b0\u05d9\u05b5\u05df<\/span> ‘an interesting book.’ However, if you want to speak about a specific book, it would need to be definite: \u05d4\u05b7\u05e1\u05bc\u05b5\u05ab\u05e4\u05b6\u05e8 \u05d4\u05b7\u05de\u05bc\u05b0\u05e2\u05b7\u05e0\u05b0\u05d9\u05b5\u05df<\/span> ‘the interesting book.’ Of course, if we’re talking about more than one book, you can see \u05e1\u05b0\u05e4\u05b8\u05e8\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05de\u05b0\u05e2\u05b7\u05e0\u05b0\u05d9\u05b0\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd<\/span> ‘interesting books’ and \u05d4\u05b7\u05e1\u05bc\u05b0\u05e4\u05b8\u05e8\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05d4\u05b7\u05de\u05bc\u05b0\u05e2\u05b7\u05e0\u05b0\u05d9\u05b0\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd<\/span> ‘the interesting books.’<\/p>\n

On the other hand, if you are talking about a talk you had with someone, you will say that you had \u05e9\u05c2\u05b4\u05d9\u05d7\u05b8\u05d4 \u05de\u05b0\u05e2\u05b7\u05e0\u05b0\u05d9\u05b6\u05ab\u05e0\u05b6\u05ea<\/span> ‘an interesting conversation.’ That specific conversation could then be referred to as \u05d4\u05b7\u05e9\u05c2\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05d7\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d4\u05b7\u05de\u05bc\u05b0\u05e2\u05b7\u05e0\u05b0\u05d9\u05b6\u05ab\u05e0\u05b6\u05ea<\/span> ‘the interesting conversation.’ The plural would be the same: \u05e9\u05c2\u05b4\u05d9\u05d7\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea \u05de\u05b0\u05e2\u05b7\u05e0\u05b0\u05d9\u05b0\u05e0\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea<\/span> ‘interesting conversations’ and \u05d4\u05b7\u05e9\u05c2\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05d7\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea \u05d4\u05b7\u05de\u05bc\u05b0\u05e2\u05b7\u05e0\u05b0\u05d9\u05b0\u05e0\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea<\/span> ‘the interesting conversations.’<\/p>\n

The book was written by a famous author who lives right here in Tel Aviv, and it’s about the life of a German soldier who hid Jews from the Nazis in the Second World War.<\/p>\n
