Mazal tov (מַזָּל טוֹב)! You’re about to embark on a journey that will not only deepen your understanding of ancient texts but also enrich your appreciation of history, culture, and language. Here are some tips to help you get started.

1. Start with the Basics

Before you can read and understand Biblical Hebrew, you need to get familiar with the Hebrew alphabet (The “Aleph-Bet”). There are 22 letters, and each one has a unique sound and shape. Spend some time practicing writing and pronouncing each letter. Flashcards can be a great tool for this. Our recent posts on this blog dealing with the beginnings of the study of Seow’s grammar will help you get started with that. You will also find advice for other online learning sites there.

2. Learn the Vowel System

Biblical Hebrew is written without vowels, but don’t panic! The Masoretes, a group of Jewish scholars, developed a system of vowel points (niqqûḏ) to help with pronunciation. Familiarize yourself with these vowel points, as they will be crucial for reading and understanding the text.

3. Build Your Vocabulary

Start with common words and phrases that appear frequently in the Bible. Words like אֱלֹהִים ʾĕlōhîm “Elohim” (God), שָׁלוֹם šālôm “Shalom” (peace), and תּוֹרָה tôrā(h) “Torah” (law) are good starting points. Use flashcards, apps, or even sticky notes around your house to reinforce your learning. A playlist is being built of the vocabulary presented in Seow’s grammar, which you can access here.

4. Understand the Grammar

Biblical Hebrew grammar can be quite different from English, so take your time to understand the basics. Focus on learning the verb conjugations, noun cases, and sentence structure. There are many great resources and textbooks available that can guide you through this process. Seow is just one of the many fantastic textbooks for learning Hebrew grammar. Of course, you should join us on our Discord server with any questions you might have. Just go to the
#biblical-hebrew
channel and ask away!

5. Practice Reading

Seow’s grammar provides reading exercises early on, which I am recording together with the vocabulary in the vocab playlist. Practice reading aloud; practice reading often; do what you can to perfect how you pronounce Hebrew words. Saying the words aloud assist in planting them in your long-term memory.

6. This will not only keep you motivated but also provide you with valuable feedback and support. Some who are on Discord may be looking for a partner, and you can also study along with us in our YouTube series on Seow’s grammar.

8.
