I figured that I would post the exercise that <a style=\"color: blue;\" href=\"http:\/\/bhebrew.biblicalhumanities.org\/viewtopic.php?f=19&amp;t=22443\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">I have just posted on B-Hebrew<\/a> and give you some insight into what goes into my thinking when I produce my translations. You are free to comment and let me know if you agree or disagree with my decisions and why.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Here\u2019s the text of the drill:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"padding-left: 20px; border-left: solid 2px black;\">(6) And it came to pass as Jacob was crossing (inf. const.) the river that (waw consec.) a man fought with him all the night until the morning. And the man said unto him, \u2018Let me go (Piel of <span class=\"he\">\u05e9\u05c1\u05dc\u05d7<\/span>), for I am an angel of God\u2019; and Jacob said, \u2018I will not let thee go until [<span class=\"he\">\u05e2\u05b7\u05d3\u05be\u05d0\u05b2\u05e9\u05b6\u05c1\u05e8<\/span>] thou hast blessed me\u2019. And the angel blessed him and Jacob let him go.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Wow, that\u2019s a long one! I tend to tackle the translation phrase-by-phrase, so I\u2019ll start with the first phrase and work through it slowly and deliberately.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"color: red;\">\u00abAnd it came to pass as Jacob was crossing the river&#8230;\u00bb<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">And it came to pass<\/span> generally translates the vav-consecutive of <span class=\"he\">\u05d4\u05b8\u05d9\u05b8\u05d4<\/span>, so that we start with the common and simple <span class=\"he\">\u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9<\/span>. We are then told by Weingreen that he wants us to use an infinitive construct for <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">as Jacob was crossing<\/span>, so I\u2019ll just add <span class=\"he\">\u05db\u05bc\u05b7\u05e2\u05b2\u05d1\u05b9\u05e8 \u05d9\u05b7\u05e2\u05b2\u05e7\u05b9\u05d1 \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea\u05be\u05d4\u05b7\u05e0\u05bc\u05b8\u05d4\u05b8\u05e8<\/span>, literally, \u201caccording to the crossing of Jacob the river.\u201d This completes the first phrase for us:<\/p>\n<p class=\"he\">\u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9 \u05db\u05bc\u05b7\u05e2\u05b2\u05d1\u05b9\u05e8 \u05d9\u05b7\u05e2\u05b2\u05e7\u05b9\u05d1 \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea\u05be\u05d4\u05b7\u05e0\u05bc\u05b8\u05d4\u05b8\u05e8<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"color: red;\">\u00ab&#8230; that a man fought with him all the night until the morning.\u00bb<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Again, Weingreen tells us what he expects us to use: a vav-consecutive. In this case, we have a few options for \u201cfight.\u201d We can use the niphal <span class=\"he\">\u05e0\u05b4\u05dc\u05b0\u05d7\u05b7\u05dd<\/span> (vav-consec: <span class=\"he\">\u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b4\u05dc\u05b8\u05ab\u05d7\u05b6\u05dd<\/span> [cp. Ex. 17:8]) in which we can render \u201cwith him\u201d in three ways: <span class=\"he\">\u05d0\u05b4\u05ea\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9<\/span>,\u200e <span class=\"he\">\u05e2\u05b4\u05de\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9<\/span>, or <span class=\"he\">\u05d1\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9<\/span>. All three are used of enemies in a fight in the Bible. So, one option for that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">a man fought with him<\/span> would be <span class=\"he\">\u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b4\u05dc\u05b8\u05ab\u05d7\u05b6\u05dd \u05d0\u05b4\u05ea\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9 \u05d0\u05b4\u05d9\u05e9\u05c1<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">However, we know that Jacob was actually <em>wrestling<\/em> with the angel, not really <em>fighting<\/em> (making war) with him. Hebrew has different terms for fighting, depending on if we mean \u201carguing\u201d (<span class=\"he\">\u05d4\u05b4\u05ea\u05b0\u05d5\u05b7\u05db\u05bc\u05b5\u05d7\u05b7<\/span>), \u201cwrestling\u201d (<span class=\"he\">\u05e0\u05b6\u05d0\u05b1\u05d1\u05b7\u05e7<\/span>), or \u201cmaking war\u201d (<span class=\"he\">\u05e0\u05b4\u05dc\u05b0\u05d7\u05b7\u05dd<\/span>). For wrestling, I would choose the appropriate verb and form the vav-consecutive with it: <span class=\"he\">\u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b5\u05d0\u05b8\u05d1\u05b5\u05e7<\/span>. When we search for the term on <a style=\"color: blue;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stepbible.org\/?q=version=OHB|strong=H0079&amp;options=HNVUG&amp;sort=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">STEPBible<\/a>, we see that this form is indeed used in the passage in which Jacob wrestled with the angel. This is clearly the correct direction, and we\u2019ll complete the phrase with <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">all the night until the morning<\/span>, which is simply <span class=\"he\">\u05db\u05bc\u05b8\u05dc\u05be\u05d4\u05b7\u05dc\u05bc\u05b7\u05ab\u05d9\u05b0\u05dc\u05b8\u05d4 \u05e2\u05b7\u05d3\u05be\u05d4\u05b7\u05d1\u05bc\u05b9\u05ab\u05e7\u05b6\u05e8<\/span>. Thus, we have the completed phrase, which we will add to our previous phrase.<\/p>\n<p class=\"he\">\u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b0\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9 \u05db\u05bc\u05b7\u05e2\u05b2\u05d1\u05b9\u05e8 \u05d9\u05b7\u05e2\u05b2\u05e7\u05b9\u05d1 \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea\u05be\u05d4\u05b7\u05e0\u05bc\u05b8\u05d4\u05b8\u05e8 \u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b5\u05d0\u05b8\u05d1\u05b5\u05e7 \u05d0\u05b4\u05ea\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9 \u05d0\u05b4\u05d9\u05e9\u05c1 \u05db\u05bc\u05b8\u05dc\u05be\u05d4\u05b7\u05dc\u05bc\u05b7\u05ab\u05d9\u05b0\u05dc\u05b8\u05d4 \u05e2\u05b7\u05d3\u05be\u05d4\u05b7\u05d1\u05bc\u05b9\u05ab\u05e7\u05b6\u05e8<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The period will be interpreted here as the end of a verse, so I\u2019ll put sof-pasuk (<span class=\"he\">\u05c3<\/span>) after this phrase and begin a new \u201cverse\u201d with the next vav-consecutive verb.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"color: red;\">\u00abAnd the man said unto him, \u2018Let me go (Piel of <span class=\"he\">\u05e9\u05c1\u05dc\u05d7<\/span>), for I am an angel of God\u2019&#8230;\u00bb<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The first verb here is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">and he said<\/span>, which is really common in the Bible. It\u2019s simply <span class=\"he\">\u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b9\u05ab\u05d0\u05de\u05b6\u05e8<\/span>, and we will put the indirect object <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">unto him<\/span> directly after it and before the subject <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the man<\/span>: <span class=\"he\">\u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05bc\u05b9\u05ab\u05d0\u05de\u05b6\u05e8 \u05d0\u05b5\u05dc\u05b8\u05d9\u05d5 \u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b4\u05d9\u05e9\u05c1<\/span>. We are then told to use the piel of <span class=\"he\">\u05e9\u05c1\u05dc\u05d7<\/span>, which means the imperative <span class=\"he\">\u05e9\u05c1\u05b7\u05dc\u05bc\u05b7\u05d7<\/span> (or <span class=\"he\">\u05e9\u05c1\u05b7\u05dc\u05bc\u05b5\u05d7\u05b7<\/span>). Rather than using <span class=\"he\">\u05d0\u05b9\u05ea\u05b4\u05d9<\/span>, we can be more biblical in our style and attach the suffix to the verb, in which case for <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">let me go<\/span>, we get <span class=\"he\">\u05e9\u05b7\u05c1\u05dc\u05b0\u05bc\u05d7\u05b5\u05ab\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9<\/span> \u201csend me forth\u201d or \u201clet me go.\u201d The next is an explanatory phrase introduced with <span class=\"he\">\u05db\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">for<\/span>, which is followed by a verbless clause <u>I am an angel of God<\/u>: <span class=\"he\">\u05de\u05b7\u05dc\u05b0\u05d0\u05b7\u05da\u05b0 \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05d0\u05b8\u05e0\u05b9\u05db\u05b4\u05d9<\/span>. (Note: <span class=\"he\">\u05de\u05b7\u05dc\u05b0\u05d0\u05b8\u05da\u05b0<\/span> is absolute; <span class=\"he\">\u05de\u05b7\u05dc\u05b0\u05d0\u05b7\u05da\u05b0<\/span> is construct.) I\u2019m going to take this as a new verse, also. I\u2019ll again use the piel of <span class=\"he\">\u05e9\u05c1\u05dc\u05d7<\/span> for the phrase <u>I will not let thee go<\/u> and render it as <span class=\"he\">\u05dc\u05b9\u05d0 \u05d0\u05b2\u05e9\u05c1\u05b7\u05dc\u05bc\u05b5\u05d7\u05b2\u05da\u05b8<\/span> (that is, <span class=\"he\">\u05dc\u05b9\u05d0 \u05d0\u05b2\u05e9\u05c1\u05b7\u05dc\u05bc\u05b5\u05d7\u05b7 \u05d0\u05b9\u05ea\u05b0\u05da\u05b8<\/span>) and add the time limitation for <u>until thou hast blessed me<\/u>: <span class=\"he\">\u05e2\u05b7\u05d3\u05be\u05d0\u05b2\u05e9\u05c1\u05b6\u05e8 \u05d1\u05b5\u05bc\u05e8\u05b7\u05db\u05b0\u05ea\u05b8\u05bc\u05ab\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9<\/span>. The final word is <span class=\"he\">\u05d1\u05bc\u05b5\u05e8\u05b7\u05ab\u05db\u05b0\u05ea\u05bc\u05b8<\/span> \u201cyou have blessed\u201d with the 1cs suffix for \u201cme.\u201d (Honestly, I accidentally noticed that form when I was looking up the forms of <span class=\"he\">\u05e9\u05c1\u05b4\u05dc\u05bc\u05b5\u05d7\u05b7<\/span> before.) Again, I added the 3ms suffixes to make it seem older. Technically, you should use it on any long vowel that is followed by vocal&nbsp;<em>sheva<\/em> (<span class=\"he\">\u05d0\u05b9\u05bd\u05de\u05b0\u05e8\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd<\/span>) and on long vowels that resist reduction in distant syllables (as in <span class=\"he\">\u05d4\u05b8\u05bd\u05d0\u05b2\u05e0\u05b8\u05e9\u05c1\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd<\/span>), but it\u2019s really only necessary to help the reader recognize that&nbsp;<em>kamats<\/em> should be read as <span class=\"tr\">a<\/span> rather than as <span class=\"tr\">o<\/span>. I also use the&nbsp;<em>oleh<\/em> to mark stressed syllables. Sometimes I like to put a pausal form where I think it might be nice to place it, in which case I will generally use either <em>etnachta<\/em> (<span class=\"he\">\u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b0\u05d3\u05b7\u05d1\u05bc\u05b5\u0591\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc<\/span>) or <em>zakef katon<\/em> (<span class=\"he\">\u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b0\u05d3\u05b7\u05d1\u05bc\u05b5\u0594\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc<\/span>), both in contrast to the regular form with the vowel reduction (<span class=\"he\">\u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b0\u05d3\u05b7\u05d1\u05bc\u05b0\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc<\/span>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">This is the submission that I will make on B-Hebrew.
