Why do New Yorkers say “on line”? The expression is “in line.” You say “online” to refer to the internet, but you wait “in line” when there are other people ahead of you waiting for some service.
Actually, I've been saying "online" before there was an internet!
Maybe it's like saying "on a line" without the "a"?
It should still be "in."

"We stood in (the) line for twenty minutes before we gave up and left."
"If I ever have to stand in (a) line for more than half an hour, I just leave."
It's supposed to be "in." You know that I've spent a lot of time in New York, yeah? I never got used to that expression.
Starbucks: "Next on line, please."
Me: "Uh, it's next in line, and that's me. How are you?"
Yes, I did that more than once. LOL
