The killing of Saddam Hussein IMHO opened the Box for the Middle East to start heading for the West.
"Even though the Assad dynasty in Syria has allegedly bankrupted the entire country over generations, one can imagine the disorder resulting in the absence of the Assad's."
The Assad's aren't absent. They are just sitting back and letting European nations and the US use the country as they wish. If the Europeans don't implode from Covid, then sometime in the next decade or so Turkey will turn around and join Iran as it marches into Europe.
