Alternative to the Eshet Chaiyl
#1
Wink
Hi Everyone,

This is my first post here. I hope this is the correct forum but please let me know if not.

I've been saying (I don't sing!) the Eshet Chaiyl to my wife in our Shabbat evening services for the last 45-odd years, but I really have problems with the translation, and in general the meaning of this poem -  It's really not appropriate to our lives in this age.

Can anyone suggest an alternative poem that I could read to her that's more in keeping with a wife as an equal partner.

Failing that I may have to make one up, and nobody would want to hear that Big Grin

Thanks

Hi Laurieo,
This was such a nice post to read and my reason for weighing in is because my marriage is close to the same length of time as yours. Give or take a few, we’re approaching 50 years.  My husband and I are partners and best friends though we couldn’t be more different.  No, I am not Jewish but I once was fairly certain I was and had learned enough Hebrew to understand that Baal in Hebrew means not just husband but possessor or owner.  Yikes!

On this site there are 32 wife poems that are beautiful and tailor-made.  Are any appropriate for a Synagogue?  I don’t know, but they are up to date. This particular one, ‘To You I Promise’ I felt was exceptional.

All the best to you both.

Thank you Searchinmyroots!  Always good to drop in.  We're doing well.  I stay busy with reading which is my favorite hobby now.  My curiosity brings me here from time to time.  I hope you and loved ones are doing well also.  I still aspire to a more vegan diet!
