(I only wish that JewishGen could have been equally useful in helping me trace my Jewish ancestry. Not their fault, of course, but frustrating.)

Thanks for the post and the shout-out, Baruch! Sorry that JewishGen hasn't helped you much with tracing your ancestors. Have you tried their JewishGen Online Worldwide Burial Registry (JOWBR)?

If you're already a member of JewishGen, then you can access it for free. Also, Ancestry.com provides free access to the Registry through membership with them.

One of the great things about the Registry (besides locating graves) is that it will give you the Hebrew name of the person you are looking for. Not even FindAGrave.com does that.

FWIW I have a full subscription to Ancestry, to GEDmatch, JewishGen, the Jewish Genealogical Society of Los Angeles, the Nebraska Jewish Historical Society, and to FamilyTreeDNA. The problem is one of tracing one's ancestry prior to immigration - especially immigration from Eastern Europe.

In the case of my great great grandfather, the problem of finding his grave has likely less to do with any tampering or desecration. But instead with the absense of cooperation from local Jewish authorities. 
Depending on your country of residence, Google Street View may be usefull for detecting grave monuments. From where I'm viewing, this feature won't move past a certain barrier:
