There are several answers to your question, depending on who you speak with.
From what I understand, when Rome kicked out the Jews, they them named the land something similar to Palestine, but there really never was a Palestine until modern days.
I'll let others chime in because I'm sure they have a lot to say if they haven't already. It's probably already answered on some of our other threads, I just have the time to look through them at the moment.

It was always used by Non-Jews to refer to the land of israel..aka Egyptians; Assyrians; Greeks. Romans. Muslins {Arab and Turk} the British and lastly the United Nations.[the home of descendants of above]..for the record
