Question Rabbis of Talmud
Posted by: V.Stelmakh - 12-16-2020, 12:57 PM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (7)

Hello everyone!

I'm a non-Jewish Ukrainian book translator and I'm currently working on a Stan Lee biography by a Jewish American author. Among other things, he writes about Lee's Judaistic beliefs and their possible connection with the writer's creations. Working on one of the chapters I've just come across a passage that I can't translate without the help of Jewish community representatives.

It reads as follows: "Discussing what the coming of the Messiah—the final redeemer, the ultimate superhero—might look like, the wise rabbis of the Talmud described a vision the Captain might have endorsed."

Could you help me to understand who are the rabbis of the Talmud? Is the author talking about the rabbis who created the Talmud as a written text, or he may as well refer to present-day rabbis who base their theological concepts on the Talmud?

Thank you in advance!

  Books by Former Christians
Posted by: searchinmyroots - 12-14-2020, 07:17 PM - Forum: Counter-Missionary Forum - Replies (40)

I had posted these on the old forum but I don't think I've done so on this one yet.

Here are 2 books (there are many others) by former Christians explaining why they have left Christianity.

Actually the second one is a line by line discussion comparing Paul's doctrine to that of the Hebrew bible.

I'd like to see this done with the entire Christian bible!

Thought they might be of interest to some.

Does someone know the name of this song?
Posted by: fish21 - 12-12-2020, 07:07 PM - Forum: Hangout - Replies (1)

Hello,

I am looking for the name of the song playing in the background at 00:10:53 - 00:11:32 in this youtube documentary:

I cannot find it with Shazam but I have the feeling it is a popular Jewih folk song.

Does someone know it?

Thank you!

Star Charity for Hanukkah

Happy Hanukkah to all!

I’m based out of metro Baltimore. Some of us know of some desperately needy Jews here and in metro DC impacted by COVID19 but not yet receiving any support. We’ve put together a GoFundMe for them in hopes that we can bring them a Happy Hanukkah as well this way. Please consider sharing:

Question Cheap or free ways to get speaking after you’ve tried the apps
Posted by: avidavid - 12-10-2020, 02:49 AM - Forum: Hebrew Language Forum - Replies (2)

I completed Pimsleur’s course (all 3 levels) and have spent a great deal of time on apps like Duo Lingo. In some ways I feel I’m not even as proficient now as I was at this point a year or 2 ago.

I tried the private company that advertises its overpriced lessons through a (somewhat fake) affiliation with Hebrew University but I didn’t like it because they grouped me with people who were completely new, the software was somewhat glitchy and the price point was too high for me. Are there any good alternatives I’m missing where I could practice speaking with real people?

  Hello!
Posted by: veeev - 12-01-2020, 04:44 AM - Forum: Introductions - Replies (3)

Hello everyone! I joined this forum to discuss a crisis I have found myself in and am seeking advice from others. I am struggling with imposter syndrome and feeling as if I am not actually Jewish and need to formally convert. But, I will share my story here for advice.

When I was a young girl (under 10) my Grandmother discovered our family lineage has Jewish roots, however, she was Christain. This made her opt into a Messianic "temple" and took me every Friday for "Shabbat". I put quotations because I know as an adult that Messianic practices are not purely Jewish and actually cause harm to the community...Here is my issue that stems from this information. As an adult, I identify myself as an Agnostic Jewish Woman (currently struggling with the essence of G-d and the complexity of life, as most young adults do). I do this because as a girl I did not like the "temple" I was taken to because it was not Jewish in my eyes. I did my own research through high school and found myself aligned in the community.

Recently, I have found myself feeling guilty for being introduced to Judaism through an inherently Christain practice, and feel as if I myself am an issue in the community. The practice is closed unless born into it or converted, but where does that leave me? Culturally I did not experience an ounce of Jewish culture until around 10, and even that was not truly the culture. My introduction to Judaism was through a problematic practice...does that essentially dispute how I have identified for over a third of my life now?
