Doing a research project, have a Yiddish question
Posted by: tg5005 - 05-11-2020, 02:11 AM - Forum: Hangout - Replies (3)

My apologies if the subject is too sensitive for anyone.
Definitely not my intent to offend.

I'm doing a research project on the much hated signs over the gates at some of the camps in Germany and I'm having a disagreement with someone on another project of that time period.

The prisoners mocked the sign over the iron gate with "Arbeit Macht Frei durch den Schornstein".

The disagreement is over whether the saying would be different if it were said or written by a Yiddish speaker. I said no and the other person says yes.

Again, my sincerest apologies if the subject is a sensitive one for readers.

And in the spirit of full transparency, I'm not Jewish. My father was but my mother wasn't.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

A divine voice sings through all creation
Posted by: robrecht - 05-01-2020, 09:25 PM - Forum: Judaism General - Replies (5)

Hi!

I recently came across a beautiful prayer, but cannot find a Hebrew version or origin of this prayer. Can anyone please point me to any information about the origin of this prayer and a Hebrew or Aramaic (original?) version?

Here is the prayer (perhaps not the best translation):

How wonderful, O Lord, are the works of your hands!
The heavens declare Your glory,
the arch of the sky displays Your handiwork
In Your love You have given us the power
to behold the beauty of Your world
robed in all its splendor.
The sun and the stars, the valleys and the hills,
the rivers and the lakes all disclose Your presence.
The roaring breakers of the sea tell of Your awesome might,
the beast of the field and the birds of the air
bespeak Your wondrous will.
In Your goodness You have made us able to hear
the music of the world.
The voices of the loved ones
reveal to us that You are in our midst.
A divine voice sings through all creation.

I especially love the last two lines!

Thank you!

Unorthodox Series and a question on online resources
Posted by: stephen_says - 04-29-2020, 09:32 PM - Forum: Judaism General - Replies (12)

Hi all, new to the forum.  I joined because I just watched the Netflix series Unorthodox and it peaked my interest and brought up a lot of questions.  I started reading Wikipedia and one thing led to another and thought I’d join to learn what I can and interact and get to know you all.  I would love to hear your opinions on the show!

Also, I came across the website theTorah.com and wondering if anyone is familiar with that and has opinions on it as a resource to learn about Judaism?  What are some other websites one can turn to for good information regarding religious Judaism?

Thanks!

Stephen

  Tzniut Modesty & general questions
Posted by: YosefTribe - 04-24-2020, 07:33 AM - Forum: Judaism General - Replies (25)

Hello everyone  Shy

The Lord has called me to Judaism and placed in my heart a strong attraction towards the culture, customs and even Israel for a while before I realized. A few family members and I plan on converting in the near future. I’ve spent my time studying the culture, practicing Hebrew and understanding the laws which I have the upmost respect for, especially the TZNIUT law. But I do have some questions that I have not found the answers for no matter how much I searched the internet.

As a married woman, I know my hair will have to be covered from what I’ve read but to what degree? Is it similar to the Muslims where no hair is to be shown at all or more laxed where it’s covered for the most part and some baby hairs might show in the front? Sorry for the odd questions, lol..

Can Jewish people wear prints on clothing or even vibrant colors? And accessories as well?  I’m asking because I once lived across the street from a Orthodox Jewish community & they only wore black.

How would a Jewish man keep his hair looking tamed if he isn’t supposed to cut it technically? (My mom really wants to know this one for some reason)

Does my spouse (who is Christian) need to be a Jew when I convert?

Do Jews pray in Yeshua’s name to God like Christians believe is the only way to pray to the Father? (I know Jesus isn’t his real name)

Again, I apologize for the many questions. I’m just very eager to learn about this religion/culture so I can follow it correctly as much as possible. Thank you in advance to those who answer.

  Atheist Father with Jewish son
Posted by: foisybeck - 04-18-2020, 08:50 AM - Forum: Judaism General - Replies (6)

Hi, I’m Beck, I’m 15
I’m looking for some advice and maybe some comfort.
I am jewish but my father is an atheist who is very against religion, he is very bigoted and often rude to any people of faith. I am embarrassed for how he is but I’ve accepted that just because he is like that, that doesn’t mean I am. His words, thoughts, and actions aren’t mine.

Anyways,
I’m at a loss of what to do. I’m scared for how he would react if he knew I wasn’t an atheist. My city has a synagogue but it’s closed at the moment because of covid-19. I just want some comfort. I am tired of having to keep my religion from him and having to put up with all the hateful words he says both at home and in public. It’s embarrassing.
I have no one to talk to about this, it’s something I’ve had to figure out completely on my own and I don’t know if I am doing something wrong etc.
