  Hello

Hello everyone, some here might remember me, I have no idea what happened to the old forum of Hebrew Cafe which I was one. I’m a convert to Christianity, I was born into a Muslim family. I’m hopefully hoping to convert to Orthodox Christianity in the near future, I mainly focus on responding to Islam and Protestantism.

Non jewish trying to make a wood passover plate
Posted by: Diego - 03-19-2020, 06:30 AM - Forum: Hangout - Replies (8)

Hello everybody!

It's nice to be here. I'm Diego from Uruguay and I'm a wood artist. As the post says, I'm not jewish, but I spent most of 2019 with a conservative family (my girlfriend's family). For this year's Seder I'd like to gift them a wood passover plate, and for that I need a little help.

I need to know what goes into it obligatorily, like hebrew messages or symbols, and mostly what is the normal diameter of both the plate and the six inside holes.

I will carve it from zero with classic hand tools.

Im also looking forward to create a wood Menorah as well in the future, but thats for another post.

Thank you very much for your help.

Shalom, Diego

Childern of YESRAEl why, why do you worship "G-d"?
Posted by: wes - 03-15-2020, 01:39 AM - Forum: Judaism General - Replies (17)

Childern of YESRAEl why, why do you worship "G-d"? I am sicken that אל is not treated with respect from בני ישראל. I cry that those who seek out the truth are given lies that kill them. Did יעקב do as האל בית-אל said or did יעקב do the commands גד?

  Corona Virus
Posted by: Chavak - 03-13-2020, 03:34 AM - Forum: Hangout - Replies (36)

So is this whole virus thing affecting anyone directly? I just had a tour of Turkey cancelled so now I have to find a new time to travel. People are buying out certain items in the store. The state has gone crazy banning events that have more than 250 people attending, although I don't know how they came up with that magic number. And of course my retirement accounts are tanking, but I'm not worried about those because they will eventually come back. I do worry though that many people are going to be very adversely affected by this and not be able to bounce back financially.

B”H
Hello everyone,
My name is Ed and I am interested in converting to Judaism. I am currently making my way through the Tanakh and am reading the daily portion with Rashi. I recently visited my local chabad-lubavitch centre and the Rabbi was very helpful, I have been reading through the books he recommended since. I am exited to meet new people on here. Please say hi.
Thanks
Ed

How safe is it to visit Israel?
Posted by: George - 03-06-2020, 06:56 PM - Forum: Israel - Replies (14)

I have some friends who want to visit Israel.

My Jewish doctor has visited three times and he said it was very safe.

He said the guide for tours carries an Uzi on his back.

He suggested using Israeli airlines because they have a least 4 marshals on board who know how handle any situation.

What do you say?

Thanks.

  Medieval Poetry: Gendered Animal Epithets
Posted by: Elijah11 - 03-05-2020, 02:35 AM - Forum: Hebrew Language Forum - Replies (8)

Hello!

I am currently writing my master's thesis on medieval Jewish poetry, but I do not know Hebrew so I am working in translation. My argument deals with gender in the poems as the animal epithets represented either God or Israel, similar to interpretations of the Song of Songs. I am hoping I can get some assistance in visually identifying the different gendered references so I can more aptly understand who is speaking in the poems and who they are speaking about.

Below is an excerpt of one of the poems I am working with and the provided translation. This comes from The Penguin Book of Hebrew Verse edited by T. Carmi. The poem is one by Moses ibn Ezra, found in this edition on page 325.

And here is an excerpt from Raymond P. Scheindlin's book titled The Gazelle, found on page 37.

Would anyone be able to type out how those animals (fem. and masc. gazelle, and fem. and masc. deer/fawn) would appear in Hebrew so I can at least identify them in the original poem's Hebrew? The poem excerpt above shows both hart, which is generally male, and fawn, which is seemingly feminine, both being used and I would like to make sure this is true to the original.

Thanks so much! And if at all possible I would want to acknowledge whoever helps me with this in my thesis, so if feel comfortable sharing your name and professional title (i.e. if you are a rabbi or scholar of a university) it would be appreciated. I will also keep an eye on my private messages if that works better.

  open-accented syllable with long vowel
Posted by: Glenn2020 - 02-17-2020, 07:07 PM - Forum: Hebrew Language Forum - Replies (4)

Hi:

In Amos 5:19 we see the word וּפְגָעוֹ    the last syllable is open-accented (which I thought was suppose to get a short vowel) but it has the long vowel holem-vav.  What is going on in this word?

Thanxs!

Film Festival for Human Rights Seeks New Film Director

I need to recruit someone interested in non paid position to act as a film director. age irrelevant. must  be very informed about the
sexual abuses and deaths happening to children due to companies that are profiting from foster care.  Its the biggest job of my life
and am assigned to find those committed to humanity.  Does anyone think that there is any crime worse than trafficking infants and children??
