Beautiful chant of Psalm 118,5 for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg
Posted by: robrecht - 09-26-2020, 06:22 PM - Forum: Hebrew Language Forum - Replies (2)

Hi!

In a memorial service for wonderful Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg at the US Capital yesterday, Rabbi Lauren Holtzblatt did a beautiful chant of Psalm 118,5. After chanting this verse, she continued to chant something that is not from the psalm that I could not recognize (beginning at 1:12 in the video below). It sounded something like this: tida hiayai (3x) yedai dedai dedai

Here's the video of Rabbi Holtzblatt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cs7GwNfX-9U

I tried to figure out the Hebrew for a while yesterday, but after listening to other versions of this today, I'm beginning to realize that this may just be musical melody chanting not intended as intelligible Hebrew words. Is that correct? If so, is there a word for this kind of nonverbal chanting?

With a little bit of research, I've found that this comes from an arrangement of Psalm 118,5-6 by Joey Weisenberg.

Here's a really beautiful full version of "Min Hameitzar" sung by Deborah Sacks Mintz with the Hadar Ensemble:

  A question about transliteration schemes
Posted by: squee100 - 09-24-2020, 08:16 PM - Forum: Hebrew Language Forum - Replies (8)

This author variously writes Sephardi ת (without דגש) as either "t" or "th." He also writes Sephardi צירי as "ai" except in the names of the letters ב, ח, ט, מ. Likewise, for Ashkenazi pronunciation he always writes "ie" for צירי except in the name of the letter ב. Would I be using his transliteration scheme correctly if I wrote "bhait" for בֵית? What about "bhaith"?

  Wild Week
Posted by: Chavak - 09-14-2020, 04:01 PM - Forum: Hangout - Replies (10)

Been a crazy week. My house was directly in the line of one of the many fires that have been burning in Oregon. Had to evacuate on Tuesday night. No notice, sheriff just showed up at the door saying you have to leave now. I've always wondered what I would take in case of an emergency like that. Found out all I really needed was my medications, a few clothes, and my cats. Everything else is either replaceable or are memories I can always carry with me. There are a couple of things I should have taken but forgot. From now on I will have a laminated list of the essentials I absolutely need. Fire got to about 1/4 of a mile from my house and then shifted directions. Fortunately no homes were burned and no lives lost. Finally got to come home yesterday. Was thankful I had a place to stay but as the saying goes, there's no place like home. Air quality is absolutely terrible, haven't seen the sun since Tuesday. Am hoping it clears off soon. So that's the end of my year....hoping things are better in the next.
Wishing everyone a sweet, healthy and safe new year.

Lightbulb Ashes of the Red Heifer
Posted by: ImAHebrew - 09-07-2020, 07:50 PM - Forum: Judaism General - Replies (2)

Shalom Everyone, is there anyone who would like to KNOW how the Ashes of the Red Heifer can both DEFILE the CLEAN, and CLEANSE the DEFILED?  This question is the greatest mystery within ALL of Judaism, and would not it cause great JEALOUSY if THOSE who are "a no-people," could end up being able to explain this great mystery to Judaism?

(Deut 32:21) They have roused Me to jealousy with a no-g-d; they have provoked Me with their vanities; and I will rouse them to jealousy with a no-people; I will provoke them with a vile nation.

Does anyone here consider me to be "vile?"  Blessings in The Name, ImAHebrew.
