  New YouTube Channel
Posted by: Jason - 02-08-2020, 11:15 AM - Forum: Hebrew Language Forum - Replies (9)

I've just opened a new YouTube channel for the Hebrew Café for learning biblical language.

I've uploaded seven videos so far that have been produced from our most recent Hebrew course.

I need 45 more subscribers, if you would be so kind as to let me have your support.

It's located at http://thehebrewcafe.com/youtube (for now).

Thanks!

  Tips against anti-semitism
Posted by: Vysvader - 02-01-2020, 09:59 PM - Forum: Judaism General - Replies (4)

Hi all,

Perhaps, this forum could be visited also by the UK-based Jewish community, people that all life learns about anti-Semitism from the community, their own real lives in the same environment (in the UK), and also can have got some useful tips/experience rather than anyone else. I came for a piece of advice and that's exactly because I'm not in touch with any Jews and just partly an ethnic Jew (from WWII, my central European family "lost memories" about their ethnicity, all relatives in Auschwitz like e.g. this one and emigrated behind the sea) and, probably, I'm not good for many Jews (I'm an atheist). Yet, still, I've to come for advice.

7.5 years ago, I emigrated into the UK and I've experienced again, in the UK. I've got problems even with minorities like Poles and the UK Muslims. I just sue my ex-employer because his management prohibited all the staff to befriend me, shouted out them that "I'm just for work" and they shouldn't be spending time after work "with Jew!!??" and in particular, just woman (one of them had almost been mine). They always appeared harassing/bothering any woman that was too friendly visiting me. In fact, they segregated me from having any form of a relationship. Maybe, I wasn't good for her, they'd also comments about my psychical condition, intelligence and almost described a homeless so perhaps, a scientist having no criminal records isn't good for heavy alcoholics, drug takers, and tattooed individuals with minimal education. A half a year later when I tried to not memorize, I can't meet them without comments under noses like: "Chocolate is sweet, Viking isn't sweet!" (to translate it, they speak that the black manager put his penis into the neck of the girl that initially wanted to be mine because she invited me after work, we were together till we started to be harassed and they kicked me out. And to mask that they shouted "Jew!!!", they speak about my family in Sweden so they started to xenophobically call me by raiders, rapers, and killers from 10th-century, by Vikings. The Brits and UK Muslims think that this isn't racistic against Swedes, at all). I sue the company owner but the people should be in prison, too. Something similar happened before in a different company, that guy was central Asian orthodox Muslim publishing videos on his social account, videos calling for attacks on Jerusalem. What could I do? What uses to do regular Jews?

How would you deal with it?

Best regards,
J. Vysvader

Coincidences in the Bible and in Biblical Hebrew
Posted by: searchinmyroots - 01-29-2020, 02:44 AM - Forum: Judaism General - Replies (20)

Just finished reading this book.

Lot's of interesting "coincidences".

Some that I've heard of before, others I had no idea of!

Speakers of Yiddish who want to contribute to an online course searched
Posted by: a_Sarah - 01-26-2020, 09:00 AM - Forum: Hangout - Replies (4)

There is a free online course system that helps people learn to a solid basic level of a vast number of languages, including Hebrew. It is called Duolingo.

However, they have been working on a course on Yiddish for a few years now, but need additional support to complete it. Does anyone of you speak Yiddish or know anyone who might be interested in helping them? The "call for applications" can be found here, underneath the status info: https://incubator.duolingo.com/courses/yi/en/status

  Who was Melchizedek?
Posted by: George - 01-23-2020, 08:13 PM - Forum: Judaism General - Replies (5)

Genesis 14:  And Malchizedek the king of Salem brought out bread and wine, and he was a priest to the Most High God.

What is his background?  Who was he?  What were his parents names?

Thank you.

  Grocery Store Kosher Section
Posted by: mic - 01-23-2020, 07:09 PM - Forum: Judaism General - Replies (3)

I work for a 4 store chain of employee owned grocery stores in Northern California that feature small, shelf stable, kosher foods sections. In reviewing these sets in our stores I feel like they could use a face lift but I don't feel like I am knowledgeable enough about Kosher foods to do it as well as it could be done. Currently we largely carry Shabbat and Hanukkah (when seasonally appropriate) candles, a few different types of Matzo crackers, tahini, and some Manischewitz products like pasta, chicken broth, potato starch, and gefilte fish.

Basically I'm asking what a Jew might find nice to find in a small kosher set in a suburban grocery store or direction towards any type of kosher foodie internet forums that might exist out there. So far I haven't been able to find the later searching through google.

My apologies in advanced if this isn't the best forum to be asking a question like this in.

Thanks!

  Probverbs 23-strike a child with a rod?
Posted by: George - 01-15-2020, 07:21 PM - Forum: Judaism General - Replies (4)

13Do not withhold discipline from a child; when you strike him with a rod, he will not die.
14You shall strike him with a rod, and you will save his soul from the grave.

Does this verse mean that we should hit a child with a rod (stick) as a means of discipline?

Thanks.

Photo My 30 year old fiance just had his barmitzfah... at the Western Wall!

This video is of my fiance, Scott Schindelar, on his second trip with Israel 2.0.

He has never been religious but a jew by birth. After visiting Israel for the second time, he has gained a new found spirituality that includes celebrating Hannukah and the weekly Shabbat. Please like, comment, and share the video :Smile

I love him, and I am SO proud of him.
